repo question?

Question by chris in NC: repo question?
I recently let a rather bad car go back to a dealership that refused to help pay for the excessive work that it needed. I now have a new car. However the dealer of the old car I had has the plate. Will I get into trouble for not turning the plate in or for a lapse in insurance for a car I no longer own or is the dealership required by law to turn the plate into the DMV? If so will this effect my getting a permanent plate for my new car
